Remarks (internal) :Scopoli first described this species as having pilei that were above 8.0 cm broad, enlarged, plane, leathery, with rugose or viscid surface and nearly white in color. The stipes were short and thick and the spines violet in color. Also, he mentioned that an agreeable odor persisted over a long period of time. Banker (1913), Coker and Beers (1951), Harrison (1961), Maas Geesteranus (1971), and Baird (1984) listed this species as distinct species of Hydnellum.
