Remarks (public):The generic concept used here is mainly based on the pileate basidiocarps, the trimitic hyphal system, and the thin-walled spores which are negative in Melzer's reagent. Coriolus typified with Polyporus versicolor is included as we find the thin basidiocarps with a black thin line between the tomentum and the context of no taxonomic significance on the generic level. Such duplex basidiocarps may be found in many species, and in the genus there are all transitions between thin and thick basidiocarps.
Lenzites is very closely related, in principle separated only by a distinctly lamellate hymenophore. However, in the Asian species L. acuta this distinction breaks down as in this species the hymenophore varies even within a single basidiocarp from tubes to lamellae. The pointed hyphal ends seen in L. betulina, the type species, are also seen in the American species T. cubensis, a species with small regular pores.
Corner (1989) has a much wider concept than accepted here and places 13 genera with trimitic hyphal system as synonyms of Trametes. He includes both stipitate (Lignosus and Microporus) and resupinate genera (Megasporoporia) and feels that type of rot and pigments are not important in the circumscription of genera in the trimitic group. Thus, he treats Pycnoporus, Hexagonia, Fomitopsis and Datronia and some other genera as synonyms. He neglects the International Code of Nomenclature as several of the genera proposed as synonyms antedate Trametes and none of these genera are proposed for conservation. According to the Code Microporus Beauv. 1805 (not O.Kunth 1898 as stated by Corner op cit. p. 2) should be valid name for Trametes sensu Corner 1989. Coriolopsis Murr. is mainly based on distinctly coloured context, a character which may be of dubious value on a generic level. See further comments under that genus (p.218). As so many species in Trametes have similar spores or mostly are found sterile, some specimens are difficult to determine, and considerable field experience is necessary to establish a good species concept in this genus. The basidiocarps are often strongly susceptible to attack from insects and should be treated in a deep-freezer or fumigated as soon as possible after collecting.

Basidiocarps annual to perennial, pileate, sessile, dimidiate to fanshaped, single or imbricate, flexible to hard; upper surface hispid to glabrous, often zonate; pore surface white, cream to pale gray; context white to isabelline, homogeneous or duplex, in some species with a dark line; hyphal system trimitic; generative hyphae hyaline, with clamps; skeletal hyphae straight, thick-walled to solid, hyaline, in some species swelling in KOH; binding hyphae tortuous, solid, hyaline; cystidia absent, in some species pointed hyphal ends may penetrate the hymenium; spores ellipsoid to allantoid, hyaline, thin-walled and negative in Melzer's reagent; causes a white rot in hardwoods, rarely on conifer wood; cosmopolitan genus with many common and widespread species.
