Description:Gloeodontia columbiensis Burt ex Burds. & Lombard, Mem. N. Y. bot. Gdn 28: 17, 1976.
Basidiome resupinate, effused, adnate, subceraceous to submembranaceous, hymenophore odontioid with conical and crowded aculei up to 1 mm long, hymenial surface whitish to pale yellowish, margin indeterminate. Hyphal system monomitic, all hyphae with clamps, subhymenial hyphae hyaline, thin-walled, 1.5-3.2 µm, tramal hyphae hyaline, sligthly thick-walled, rather indistinct, 2-4 µm in diam Cystidia of two kinds: 1) cylindrical, thick-walled, strongly encrusted, somewhat fasciculate in the core of aculei and protruding through the apex, irregularly spreading out laterally, variable in length, up to 9 µm in diam, 2) gloeocystidia numerous, vesicular to cylindrical, 20-60 x 5-8 µm, thin-walled, often with a small and rounded apical appendage, SA+. Basidia clavate, often with a median constriction and somewhat stalked, 15-35 x 5-6 µm, with 4-sterigmata and a basal clamp. Basidiospores ellipsoid, with a small lateral apiculus, 5.5-7 x 3.5-4.5 µm, finely asperulate, smooth or nearly so in KOH, thick-walled, hyaline or very pale yellowish, strongly amyloid, acyanophilous.
Distribution in Europe: France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain(?), Turkey, and the Caucasus. Very rare species in all European countries, it occured in Italy only once in Sardegna.
Representative specimens examined: Mte. Arcosu WWF Reserve (Cagliari) 800m, 06 Apr. 2008, leg. & det. L. Arras coll. 1189. The specimens has been very quickly destroyed by insects, therefore the description and the drawing are partially referred to G. Trichies coll. 7410, Lourmarin, Vanduse (France).
