Description:Hymenochaete cruenta (Pers.) Donk, Persoonia 1(1): 51, 1959.
Bas.: Thelephora cruenta Pers., Syn. meth. fung. (Göttingen) 2: 575, 1801.
Basidiome resupinate to effuse-reflexed, adnate, abhymenial surface brown, hymenophore smooth to slightly tuberculate, reddish to purplish, black in KOH. Hyphal system monomitic, hyphae simple septate, thin to thick-walled, 3-4 µm wide, hyaline to pale yellow. Setae fusiform, with blunt or acute apex, some with irregular constrictions, variable in lenght, 60-80 x 6-10 µm, thick-walled, brown, not encrusted, projecting 40-50 µm. Basidia tubular, 20-25 x 4-5 µm, with 4-sterigmata, simple-septate at the base. Basidiospores cylindrical, slightly curved, 6-8 x 2-2.5(-3) µm, smooth, thin-walled, hyaline, IKI-.
Distribution in Europe: Poland, Russia, France, Romania, Czech Republic,Switzerland, United Kingdom, Slovenia, Netherlands, Bulgaria, Turkey, Italy, Spain, and the Caucasus. Uncommon species in Italy with a sporadic distribution in Piemonte, Trentino Alto-Adige, Veneto, Toscana and Calabria.
Substratum: always on Abies alba.
