Description:Metulodontia nivea (P. Karst.) Parmasto, Consp. System. Corticiac. (Tartu): 118, 1968.
Bas.: Kneiffia nivea P. Karst., Hedwigia 35: 173, 1896. Syn.: Corticium sublaeve Bres., Annls mycol. 1(1): 95, 1903.
Basidiome resupinate, effused, adnate, hymenophore tuberculate to grandinioid, whitish to pale cream or yellowish, margin rhizomorphic. Hyphal system monomitic, hyphae with clamps, thin-walled, 2-3 µm wide, richly branched and irregularly interwoven. Cystidia of two kinds: 1) cystidia strongly encrusted with romboidal crystals, 60-80 x 6-10 µm, thick-walled, 2) gloeocystidia, cylindrical to fusiform, with an obtuse tapering apex, 25-35 x 3-5 µm, thin-walled, sometimes with a small appendage, with small oildrops in the protoplasm, SA+. Basidia clavate, 15-20 x 3-5 µm, with 4-sterigmata, and a basal clamp. Basidiospores ellipsoid to ovoid, 4-5 x 3-3.5 µm, smooth, thin-walled, IKI-, acyanophilous.
Distribution in Europe: Germany, Turkey, Estonia, France, Macedonia, Greece, Belgium, Russia, Sweden, Italy, Norway, Switzerland, Finland, and the Caucasus. Very rare species in Italy, recorded from Trentino Alto-Adige and Emilia-Romagna.
Substrata: it occurs on trunks of Pinus sylvestris and Abies abies.
