Remarks (internal):Fries first described this species as having pilei that were gregarious, convex to plane or umbilicate, subzonate, glabrous, scrobiculate, leathery, irregular, highly fused, concrescent, confluent, rarely single, white at margin to bluish black or violet-black. The stipe was about 1.0 inch long, thin, elastic, glabrous, abnormal shape caused by several that fused together or were branched, flattened, and black in color. The spines were subfirm not decurrent white at the margin to subashy gray when touched. Maas Geesteranus (1968), Harrison (1961), and Baird (1984) consider the species distinct

Description:Hydnum melaleucum Fries. 1821. Syst. Mycol. 1:406.
Representative specimen: TENN no. 5223.
Macromorphology (preserved, mihi): Sporophore: pileus up to 3.0 cm broad, plane to depressed, tomentose to matted or glabrous, slightly concentrically zoned, radially rugulose, scrupose at disc, olive brown (4D4) to hair brown (5E4); context not duplex, azonate, concolorous with pileus surface; taste none; odor slightly fragrant. Stipe: up to 2.7 x 0.3 cm, central, terete, flattened to subattenuate below with thickened base, tomentose below to glabrous above, gray brown (6E5); context not duplex, azonate, concolorous with pileus flesh. Spines: up to 2.0 mm long, decurrent, crowded, butter yellow (4A5), pale yellow (4A3) to pale gray (4BI) or brownish orange (5C3). Chemical reactions: preserved context tissue dark olivaceous to blackish in KOH or NH4OH. Micromorphology (preserved, mihi): Pileus trama hyphae: up to 6.0 µm diam" uninflated, interwoven in subsurface layer, parallel below, unclamped; gloeoplerous-like hyphae present. Stipe hyphae: up to 5.0 µm diam., uninflated' interwoven in subsurface layer, parallel below, unclamped; gloeoplerous-like hyphae present. Spine trama hyphae: up to 4.5 ,um diam., unclamped. Basidia: (n=20) 24.0-30.0 x 5.5-6.5 µm (X= 27.0 " 2.34 x 5.8 " 0.72 µm), clavate, unclamped, 4-spored; sterigmata (n=10) 3.5-4.0 µm long (X= 3.7 " 0.21 ,um). Basidiospores: (n=20) 4.2-5.0 x 4.0-4.5 ,um (X= 4.6 " 0.34 x 4.3 " 0.15 µm), subglobose to globose, hyaline; ornamentation echinulate, spinules not prominent; hilar appendage oblique.
