Description:Epidermophyton floccosum (Harz) Langer. & Milochevitch
Colony characteristics. Colonies (SGA) velvety, sometimes powdery, felty, velvety, becoming woolly, gently folded, pale yellow to ochre or mustard-yellow; reverse yellowish-tan with yellow-brown centre. The colonies quickly become whitish, floccose and sterile.
Microscopy. Macroconidia arranged in clusters, smooth-walled, rather thin-walled, 2-5-celled, 10-40 — 6-12 µm, clavate with blunt tip. Chlamydospores and arthroconidia common in older cultures.
Differential diagnosis. The genus is distinguished from Trichophyton and Microsporum by the absence of microconidia. The macroconidia are rather thin-walled and develop as lateral or terminal outgrowths of mature hyphae, and initially lack a basal septum. Occasionally a reddish pigment is exuded into the agar (Frágner, 1968; Listemann, 1974). The dark brown, soil-inhabiting species E. stockdaleae Prochacki & Engelhardt-Zasada (1974), now known to be a synonym of Trichophyton ajelloi (p. 956), differs from E. floccosum by longer conidia and tolerance of 7% NaCl (CabaÀ±es et al., 1993).
Distribution. World-wide.
