Description:Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (Splendore) de Almeida
Colony characteristics. Colonies (SGA, 24°C) with slow growth, leathery, flat to wrinkled, becoming felty, whitish to brown with brownish reverse; at 37°C on BHI colonies butyrous, cerebriform.
Microscopy. Conidia at 24°C absent or are intercalary-like chlamydospore cells. At 37°C on BHI a yeast-like form is produced, which consists of spherical cells up to 30 µm diam, producing synchronous buds all over its surface.
Serology. Serodiagnosis was described by Taborda & Camargo (1994).
Distribution. Central and South America (Blotta et al., 1999), where it occurs in moist climates, mostly (sub)tropical rainforests (Restrepo, 1985). Elsewhere the species is imported (Horré et al., 2002).
