Description:Hydnellum coalitum Maas G., spec. nov.12 Fig. 18 (p. 46), Pl. 18 fig. b
Etymology: coalitus, grown together.
Holotypus: "France, Jura, entre Billiat et Lhopital sur la [route] N 491. Sous Pinus silvestris sur calcaire vers 500 m d'altitude. 28 octobre 1969. V. Demoulin" (LG 106); isotypus in L.
Basidiomes concreseent. Pileus up to 40 mm across, at first planoconvex, then depressed, originally smooth and densely velutinous, later with low swellings and pitted or finely scrupose, without concentric zones or radiate markings, pale buff, isabella to more or less umber in older parts, in centre with age rough or with occasional holes, sooty to blackbrown. Stipe 18-30 x 6-10 mm, cylindrical or somewhat widened below, thickly and softly velutinous, holding various bits of debris, pale terracotta. Spines up to 3 mm long, 0.1-0.2 mm broad, decurrent, crowded, subulate, finally purplish brown. Context up to 10 mm thick in centre of pileus, inconspicuously duplex, pale purplish brown, conspicuously duplex in stipe.
Hyphae of pileus 2.7-6.5 µm wide, not inflating, thin-walled or with moderately thickened cell-walls, branched, septate, without clampconnections. Basidia 22-25 x 6.5-7 µm (immature), clavate, without basal clamp. Spores 5.4-6.3 x 3.8-4.5 µm, of irregular outline, tubercular (tubercles fairly numerous, prominent, rather coarse, with more or less flattened apices), brownish. (Description after dried material.)
