Description:SARCODON FENNICUS (P. Karst.) P. Karst. (p. 63) Fig. 42 (p. 67), Pl. 31 figs. a-c
Basidiomes simple or partly concrescent. Pileus up to 100 mm across, plano-convex to depressed, densely fibrillose, becoming scaly; scales coarse in centre of pileus, erect or ascending, more fibrillose, narrower, and adhering to appressed towards margin; originally ochraceous yellow, then yellow-brown to dark yellow-brown, occasionally with reddish brown hue, contrasting with pale yellow-brown ground colour. Stipe 35-70 x 10-25 mm, cylindrical or tapering below, tomentose, glabrescent, usually concolorous with pileus above, bluish green or grey-green below, but base often covered by whitish mycelium. Spines up to 5 mm long, 0.1-0.3 mm broad, whitish, finally purplish brown. Context whitish in pileus, grey-green in base of stipe. Taste bitter.
Hyphae up to 20 µm wide. Basidia 40-45 x 6-7 µm. Spores 6.3-7.6 x 4.5-5.2 µm.
