Type. Clavaria pyxidata Pers.: Fr. Syst. Mycol., 1, p. 470. 1821.
Basidiomata pyxidately branched, lignicolous. Tram a monomitic, but dimitic in A. colensoi and A. dichotomus. Generative hyphae inflated, thin-walled, clamped. Skeletal hyphae (when present) with walls 1.0-1.5 µm thick. Gloeoplerous hyphae present in trama, terminating in hymenium as gloeocystidia; contents sulfobenzaldehyde positive, granular in Congo red. Basidia 4-sterigmate, rarely 2-sterigmate, narrowly clavate to cylindrical, thin-walled, clamped. Basidiospores small, white, hyaline, thin-walled, amyloid, asperulate but smooth in A. cristatus, often guttulate.
