Conidia typically 3-celled, occasionally 2-3-celled, never more, 20.5-41 x 9.5-15.5 µm, mostly 30-35 x 11-13.5 µm (mean of 50 spores: 31.7x 12.4 µm), spore germination always strictly bipolar. On rice grain, Hyderabad, etc. / Bipolaris tetramera (McKinney) Shoemaker. Conidia oblong or ellipsoid, straight, with broadly rounded ends, of uniform straw brown colour, predominantly 3-septate, not constricted at septa, with a tiny black scar at base, 11-43 x 7-20 µm, but mostly 23-35 x 8-14 µm. Hynes (H. J. Hynes, in F. & Proc. Roy. Soc., N.S.W., 70; 383-386; 1937) thought that Helminthosporium tetramera and Curvularia spicifera (Bainier) Boedijn are the same. If both fungi are the same, the correct citation would be Bipolaris spicifera (Bain.) comb. nov. ** Ellis, M. B., 1971, Dematiaceous Hyphomycetes, C.M.I., Kew, p. 415. ** Chidambaram, P., S. B.
