Remarks (internal):F. rosea resembles F. cajanderi, but is generally thicker, more blunt-edged, darker on its upper surface and grows older. The receding pore area of F. rosea is characteristic. The best characters are found in the spores: those of F. cajanderi are arcuate at least in the apicular ends and their mean thickness is slightly less than 2 µm; those of F. rosea are convex also on their ventral sides and the thickness exceeds 2 µm. When sterile, the species can be separated by their skeletal hyphae, studied in KOH mounts. Those of F. cajanderi retain their pink colour and show distinct, rather thick walls; the skeletals of F. rosea turn brownish (the change visible by unaided eye), and are oily refractive throughout, with wall thickness not easily seen.

Description:Fomitopsis rosea (Alb. & Schw.: Fr.) Karst.

Perennial; fruit bodies pileate or thickly effused-reflexed, mostly solitary, obtuse, triquetrous or (finally) hoof-shaped, 3-10 cm wide, 1-4 cm thick, projecting 1-5 cm; surface even or indistinctly zoned, tar brown with a light pinkish tint, when old black and minutely rimose, forming a thin crust; margin obtuse, pinkish brown. Pores pale pink, round, (4-)5-6(-7) per mm, actively growing pore area receding in old fruit bodies. Upper surface not fading during winter, but pores bleach somewhat or become brownish; no strong colour changes on bruised parts. Trimitic but appearing dimitic, generative hyphae with clamp connections, scarce; skeletal hyphae translucent reddish brown, subsolid, subparallel; binding hyphae similar but narrower, solid, branched and freely oriented and restricted to oldest parts only; spores long-ellipsoid, not at all arcuate, (5.1-)5.7-6.1(-6.5) x 2.1-2.5 µm, IKI-, CB-.
Causes weak brown-rot on Picea glauca and P. mariana, observed on old stumps and thick logs in old campsites, mostly close to the ground. Rather rare.
