Description:Coniothyrium fuckelii Sacc.
Colony characteristics. Colonies (OA) moderately fast-growing, tan; reverse dark brown.
Microscopy. Pycnidia brown, solitary, occasionally aggregated, subspherical, 180-300 ?m diam. Pycnidial wall pseudoparenchymatous of textura angularis. Conidiogenous cells hyaline, ampulliform, phialidic, lining the internal wall of the pycnidia. Paraphyses abundant, hyaline, cylindrical. Conidia pale brown, shortly cylindrical with rounded ends, unicellular, smooth-walled, 2.5-4.0 x1.5-2.0 ?m.
Teleomorph. Leptosphaeria coniothyrium (Fuckel) Sacc. (Ascomycota, Euascomycetes, Pleosporales: Lepto-sphaeriaceae).
Remark. The genus Coniothyrium needs revision, the species are as yet poorly circumscribed. Pycnidial species with 1-celled conidia, including C. fuckelii, should be reclassified in Microsphaeropsis (H.A. van der Aa, pers. comm.).
