Remarks (internal):Dring (1980) considered Clathrus to be the most primitive genus of the family and the most variable, from which several evolutionary series may be derived, principally the clathroid-series, with a spherical latticed receptacle, and the anthuroid-series, with stellate arms. The latter has been considered, until recent years, as a separate genus, Anthurus, but the characters of the receptacle arms being apically united in the early stages, together with the gleba covering the inner surfaces, indicates that a continous developmental series exists and no generic delimitation can be maintained.

Immature fruitbody sub-hypogeous, 2-4 cm diam., more or less globose, consisting of an outer, pale peridium, enclosing an unexpanded receptacle embedded in a gelatinous endoperidium, with basal mycelial strands. Peridium off-white to ochre-yellow, membranous, with a gelatinous, translucent yellow endoperidium; position of internal peridial sutures marked by reticulations on the surface of unexpanded fruitbody; rupture apical into irregular lobes at maturity, the peridium retained as a volva to which the receptacle remains attached. Gleba mucilaginous, dark greenish, deliquescent at maturity, borne on the inner surfaces of the receptacle either dispersed over entire surface or restricted to numerous, scattered `glebifers'. Receptacle fragile, rapidly expanding on release, bright red in British species, paler at base, always showing some apico-basal differentiation, either forming a latticed, hollow sphere (clathroid) or stellate, with 4-6 radiating arms (anthuroid); arms with spongy texture, hollow, complex, consisting of many intercommunicating tubes. Odour finally strongly foetid. Spore mass olive-brown.
Basidiospores ellipsoid, hyaline to straw-yellow, smooth. Habitat solitary or gregarious, on rich soil or rotting wood in woodland and gardens, preferring warmer localities. Type species: Clathrus ruber Mich.: Pers.
