Remarks (internal):Characteristic features of the basidiocarps of P. carbonica are the large, thick-walled hyphae and small spores. Resupinate specimens of Trametes serialis Fr. are very similar macroscopically, but differ in their larger spores and narrower hyphae. Poria carbonica was described by Overholts in two different publications. First, in 1943 (in Nobles, 17) the type was given as "collected on charred log of Pinus ponderosa at Missoula, Mont., September, 1916, J. R. Weir (No. 8198) (Overholts Herb. No. 4169)." The second "original" description in 1946 (21) gave the type as "collected on coniferous log at Saanichton, British Columbia, August 31, 1938, by Dr. Irene Mounce and Jean Straight (Overholts
Herb. 22021)." Material from both type collections show the hyphae to be up to 9 µm; in diam, not 3-4 as given in the original descriptions.

Basidiocarps annual, effused up to several feet, tough-corky, not easily separable; margin ivory to pallid, narrowly sterile, finely tomentose, less than 1 mm wide; pore surface white to ivory, the pores circular to angular, 3-5 per mm, with thick, entire dissepiments that sometimes become thin and lacerate; context ivory, azonate, with pale brownish, thin, cartilaginous layers or areas, tough, up to 1 mm thick; tube layer concolorous and continuous with the context, corky, up to 10 mm thick; taste mild.
Context hyphae hyaline in KOH, of two types, some very thickwalled, rarely branched, sinuous, aseptate, 5-8.5 µm in diam, others thin-walled, often branched, occasionally simple-septate, 2.5-4 µm in diam; tramal hyphae similar; hymenial layer 12-14 µm; thick; basidia clavate, 12-14 x 5-6 µm; cystidia none; spores hyaline, smooth, cylindrical, 5-5.5 x 2-2.5 µm; (Fig. 1, F).
Substratum and rot: Associated with a brown cubical rot of Abies, Alnus, Larix, Pinus, Pseudotsuga, and Tsuga and coniferous woods in use.
