Remarks (public):The species is easy to recognize by its living host and the sappy large basidiocarps with a pale brown upper surface.
Donk (1971) was convinced that Boletus pulvinus Pers. is a prior name for this species. Since no type or authentic material is known of this species, we prefer to use the well established and descriptive name cited above.

Basidiocarps annual, pileate, applanate to slightly convex, dimidiate, fanshaped to rounded, usually with a contracted base, especially when growing from necrotic depressions, up to 15 cm wide and long, 1 to 5 cm thick, fleshy and flexible when fresh, hard but friable when dry and light of weight; upper surface finely adpressed-velutinate when young, but soon more or less glabrous and smooth, at first whitish brown becoming darker from the base with age, often pitted and slightly tuberculate; margin rounded, finely pubescent and pale brown; pore surface smooth and white in actively growing specimens and then darker when bruised, later dirty brown and cracked in old specimens, pores circular, 2-4 per mm; context much thicker than tubes, white, hard and tough, up to 4 cm thick; tube layer concolorous with pore surface, up to 4 mm thick.
Hyphal system dimitic in context, monomitic in trama; generative hyphae with large clamps, hyaline to pale brown, thin-walled, branched, 3.5-6 µm in diam; vegetative hyphae thick-walled, nonseptate, intermediate between skeletal hyphae and sparingly branched binding hyphae of the Bovista type, hyaline, flexuous, 3-6 (8) µm wide, negative in Melzer's reagent.
Cystidia absent, fusoid cystidioles present, 20-30 x 5-7 µm, with a basal clamp. Basidia narrowly clavate, 4-sterigmate, 25-30 x 7-9 µm, with a basal clamp. Basidiospores cylindrical, fusiform, tapering to the apex, usually characteristically bent close to the base, hyaline, smooth, thin-walled, negative in Melzer's reagent, 6-8 x 2.5-3.5 µm.
Type of rot. Brown rot in living Quercus spp.

Substrata. Exclusively on living or recently dead Quercus spp.
Distribution. A rare but widespread species in Europe, known north to southern part of Fennoscandia with one locality in Norway, more widespread in southern Sweden, not known from Finland. An Eurasian species known east to Japan.
