Caes. Leop. Carol. 13:21, 1826 - Amauroderma subrugosum (Bres. & Pat.) Torrend, Broteria Bot. 18:128, 1920. Basidiocarps annual, single or rarely caespitose, laterally stipitate, more rarely central and then only because the pileus becomes fused behind the stipe attachment, flat to convex with a deflexed margin, up to 10 cm wide and about 1 cm thick, woody hard when dry; pilear surface deep brown to black, glabrous, semiglossy, concentrically
zonate and slightly sulcate, in dry specimens somewhat radially wrinkled, in section with a distinct black cuticle about 100-300 µm thick; stipe up to 12 cm long, 3-8 mm thick, deep sepia-brown to black, in section with a distinct outer and inner cuticle, between which there is a whitish to pale wood-coloured context, the inner core whitish and in part hollow; pore surface whitish when actively growing, darkening when touched, brown with age and on drying, pores small and isodiametric, 6-9 per mm, tubes pale brown, up to 5 mm long, only slighter darker than the context; context whitish to pale ochraceous, up to 4 mm thick, fibrous and with two black resinous bands, of a looser consistency between the two bands than above and below.
Hyphal system amphimitic; generative hyphae with clamps, in the trama mostly thin-walled, short-celled, 2-6 µm wide, several hyphae in the stipe core and in the context up to 35 µm wide, slightly thick-walled; arboriform hyphae slightly tortuous, thick-walled to solid, 3-7 µm wide, very pale yellowish, with few apical branches, in the trama rather intertwined and not regular and parallel as in other Amauroderma species; pilear cuticle a palisade of thick-walled generative hyphae, yellowish to deep brown and with numerous short cells, densely agglutinated.
Cystidia absent; cystidioles slightly ventricose, up to 35 x 4-8 µm.
Basidia clavate, 20-30 x 12-14 µm, with four sterigmata.
Basidiospores subglobose, 11.5-13 x 10-11 µm, bitunicate, the endosporium finely asperulate, pale yellowish in maturity.
Substrata. On the ground, attached to buried roots in hardwood forests.
Distribution. Widely distributed in the tropics, especially in South East Asia. In East Asia known from subtropical China, Japan, Taiwan, North Thailand, and Vietnam. Remarks. Polyporus rugosus was described from Java. Amauroderma rude (Berk.) Torrend also has a light context and black pileus, but the pores are larger (2-3 per mm), and it is mainly distributed in Australia (Cunningham 1965).
