Remarks (public):This species is remarkable in its positive reaction to a-naphthol, but not syringaldazine or guaiacol, in tests for laccase.
Cultures can be distinguished by their fast growth and white colonies, developing pellicular or crustose patches on MEA, sensitivity to malachite green and benomyl, purple reaction at 2 wk on CAA, and strong growth and reactions in urease test broth. The crustose patches on MEA colonies sometimes develop a fertile hymenium after long storage. Crustose or pellicular patches of interlocking cells are characteristic of cultures of Polyporus and are rarely encountered among the corticioid fungi.

Description:Cerocorticium confluens (Fr.: Fr.) Jülich & Stalpers
Species code: 2a(b).3c.11.26.32.36.38(-40).(43-)44.50(-51-53).54.60.61.
Growth on MEA: Moderately fast, plates covered in 3 wk, to moderate, plates covered in 4 wk. Radius at 2 wk averaging 43 mm (36-48), at 6 wk averaging 129 mm. Margins even, submerged to appressed, fimbriate, hyaline. Mat at 2 wk low and thin, silky to farinose to downy to woolly, at 6 wk silky to cottony, with some pellicular patches, azonate, hyaline, with submerged clouds, to white to cream (4A1½). Reverse at 2 wk faintly bleached, at 6 wk unchanged to coloured, pale yellow (4A2½). Not fruiting within 6 wk (fruiting at 1 year). Odour +, "fragrant".
Microscopic characters: Marginal hyphae tubular, undulating or slightly tortuous, 1.4-6 µm broad, with simple clamp connections. Branching sometimes from or opposite clamp connections. Cultures monomitic, generative hyphae in older mat remaining thin-walled, smooth, inamyloid, 1.1-6.8 µm broad, with simple clamp connections. Some area with branched, interlocking cells forming a plectenchyma, the hyphal walls thin and at times difficult to discern. Crystals lacking in mat and agar. Submerged hyphae predominantly tubular, inamyloid, 1-4 µm broad, with simple clamp connections, thin-walled, with intercalary swellings or occasional swollen or ampullate clamp connections, 4-4.5 µm broad. Conidia lacking.
Growth on PDA: Fast, plates covered in 2 wk, to moderately fast, plates covered in 3 wk. Diameter at 2 wk averaging 72.3 mm (54-85), at 6 wk averaging 207 mm. Margins even, appressed, fimbriate (finely), hyaline. Mat at 2 wk silky to downy to woolly to felty, at 6 wk woolly to floccose, with pellicular to crustose patches with recurved edges, azonate. Mat hyaline to white to cream, (4A2-4½A1½). Reverse at 2 wk unchanged, at 6 wk coloured, pale yellow (4A3). Not fruiting within 6 wk. Odour (+) , "other" (faint skunk) .
Growth on ML: Fast, plates covered in 2 wk, occasionally 3. Diameter at 2 wk averaging 82.4 mm (77.5-85), at 6 wk averaging 241 mm. Margins even, submerged to appressed, fimbriate, hyaline. Mat at 2 wk low and thin, downy to thinly cottony, at 6 wk woolly to floccose, with pellicular to crustose patches, azonate. Mat hyaline to white to cream (4A2). Reverse at 2 wk unchanged to coloured, pale yellow (4A2), at 6 wk (4A3). Not fruiting within 6 wk. Odour (+), nondescript.
Growing on angiosperms (including Ostrya). Heterothallic, tetrapolar (Boidin and Des Pomeys 1961), nuclear behaviour normal (Boidin 1958a).
Isolate studied: T-304.
