Description:SERPULA HIMANTIOIDES (Fr.:Fr.) P. Karst. Fig. 9 Bidrag K˵nnedom Finlands Natur Folk 48:344. 1889.
Basidiocarps developing on fragile, pinkish cream, rhizomorphic mycelial mats, annual, resupinate, developing in scattered patches up to 10 cm wide, easily separated from substratum; hymenial surface shallowly merulioid, becoming dark brown as spores mature; hyphal system monomitic; hyphae mostly hyaline, thin-walled, with conspicuous clamps, 3-5 µm in diam; also some with dark brown contents, these also with clamps, up to 8 µm in diam; cystidia none; some fusoid to hyphoid cystidioles intermixed with the basidia; basidia clavate with an elongated, narrow base, 4-sterigmate, 50-85 x 9-10 µm, with a basal clamp; basidiospores ovoid, pale brown in KOH, smooth, thick-walled, weakly to moderately strongly dextrinoid in Melzer's reagent, 9-10.5 x 4.5-6 µm.
Associated with a brown rot. Not previously reported from Hawaii. RLG 17619, on koa, Keanakolu Rd., North Hilo Dist., Hawaii.
