Description:Dendrothele candida (Schw.) Lemke
(610; different morphology and physiology) Isolate code: (1-)2 .6.(26m).(27).(31g).32.36.38.47.54.
Growth on MEA: Very slow, plates not covered after 6 wk. Radius at 2 wk averaging 9.1 mm (6.5-12.8), at 6 wk averaging 36.1 mm (20-49). Margins uneven (scalloped), appressed, dense, opaque. Mat at 2 wk cottony, at 6 wk silky to woolly to floccose, zonate, white. Reverse at 2 wk coloured, pale yellow (4A3), at 6 wk unchanged to coloured, yellow (4A3). Not fruiting within 6 wk. Odour (+) to + (nondescript or malty).
Microscopic characters: Marginal hyphae tubular, straight, thinwalled, 2.1-3.6 µm broad, with sparse, simple septa, sparsely branched. Branching acute, not associated with septa or clamp connections. Cultures monomitic, generative hyphae of older mat predominantly tubular or faintly monilioid, smooth, inamyloid, 1-4 µm broad, simple-septate, remaining thin-walled or with walls up to 0.8 µm thick. Crystals present among aerial hyphae, polarized, chunky or plate-like, 4-12 pxm broad, or tetrahedral, nonpolarized, 8-9 µm broad, single. Submerged hyphae mostly lumpy-monilioid, inamyloid, 2.3-5.3 µm broad, simpleseptate, with walls to 0.5 µm thick, with straight and largely unbranched capilliform hyphae 1.4-2 µm broad. Conidia lacking.
Growth on PDA: Very slow, plates not covered after 6 wk. Diameter at 2 wk averaging 12.9 mm (9.3-15), at 6 wk averaging 42.3 mm (27-49). Margins even, appressed, dense, opaque. Aerial mycelium present. Mat at 2 wk dense, low and thin, felty, at 6 wk woolly to felty to lacunose, zonate. Mat cream to pale orange (5A1½, 6B2). Reverse at 2 wk coloured, yellow to brown (4½B3, 5C3), at 6 wk similar (4½B2½-6C2). Not fruiting within 6 wk. Odour + to 2+, "fragrant" to "other" (fruity, sometimes with yeast).
Growth on ML: Very slow, plates not covered after 6 wk. Diameter at 2 wk averaging 13.2 mm (11.1-15), at 6 wk averaging 38.6 mm (31-46). Margins uneven (scalloped), appressed, dense, opaque. Aerial mycelium present. Mat at 2 wk dense, low and thin, felty, at 6 wk woolly to felty, zonate. Mat white to faintly orange (to 7A1½). Reverse at 2 wk coloured, orange to brownish orange (6A3, 6C3), at 6 wk (5B3-6B2). Not fruiting within 6 wk. Odour 2+, "fragrant" to "earthy or musty" or "other" (mushrooms, mould, apples with yeast).
Growing on angiosperms (Quercus).
Isolate studied: T-610.
