Remarks (public):Codes 37-39 in Thorn et al. (1990) were the result of one Finnish isolate that developed slightly brownish mats (37) and a brown reverse (39). This species is distinguished by its positive reactions, without growth, on TAA and GAA, its strong clearing and purple reaction on BCP-MSG agar, and its strong urease reaction.

Description:Polyporus pseudobetulinus (Murashk. ex Pilát) Thorn et al.
References: Thorn et al. (1990)
Species code: 2.6.8.(10-)11.26.(34).35.36(-37).(38-39-)40. (46-)47.(51).54.
Growth on MEA: Slow, plates covered in 6 wk, to very slow, plates not covered after 6 wk. Radius at 2 wk averaging 12.1 mm (7-20.2), at 6 wk averaging 48.1 mm (31-75). Margins even to uneven, submerged, fimbriate to wispy to plumose, hyaline. Aerial mycelium present. Mat at 2 wk sparse to dense, low and thin, silky to granular to woolly to floccose to felty to crustose, at 6 wk silky to woolly to felty to crustose, sometimes lacunose, azonate, hyaline to white. Reverse at 2 wk faintly bleached to bleached (66%), at 6 wk bleached. Fruiting within 6 wk, or not. Odour nil to (+), "earthy or musty" (nil or whiterotted wood).
Microscopic characters: Marginal hyphae tubular, straight, thinwalled, 1-3.7 µm broad, with sparse to frequent simple septa. Cultures dimitic, at least in older mat, with predominantly unbranched, inamyloid skeletal hyphae, 1-2 µm broad. Hyphae of older mat predominantly tubular, smooth, mostly inamyloid, 1-3.7 µm broad, simple-septate, with terminal and intercalary swellings, up to 14 µm broad, becoming thickwalled and amyloid, with branched, interlocking cells forming a plectenchyma, sometimes appearing cuticular. Crystals lacking in mat and agar. Submerged hyphae similar to aerial, inamyloid, 1-3.5 µm broad, simple-septate, thin-walled. With thallic arthroconidia, short-cylindric (3.6-)4-7.5(-9) x (2.2-)2.6-3.3(-4.1) µm.
Growth on PDA: Slow, plates covered in 6 wk, to very slow, plates not covered after 6 wk. Diameter at 2 wk averaging 24.7 mm (16-38.3), at 6 wk averaging 72 mm (> 42.5 mm). Margins even to uneven, appressed to raised, fimbriate, hyaline. Aerial mycelium present. Mat at 2 wk dense to moderate, low and thin to deep, silky to thinly woolly, or deeply cottony, at 6 wk silky to woolly to floccose, with crustose patches, azonate. Mat hyaline to white to cream to pale yellow to brown (4A1½, 5B3, 6½C4, with crustose patches to 6½D5). Reverse at 2 wk coloured, pale yellow to brown (4A2-, 5B4-7D4), at 6 wk coloured, pale yellow to brown (4A3, 5B4, 6½C4-8E5). Fruiting within 6 wk, to not fruiting within 6 wk. Odour nil to (+), "fragrant" (faintly lemony).
Growth on ML: Moderate, plates covered in 4 wk, to very slow, plates not covered after 6 wk. Diameter at 2 wk averaging 34.1 mm (18.3-47.7), at 6 wk averaging 88 mm (> 41.5 mm). Margins even, submerged to appressed, fimbriate, hyaline. Aerial mycelium present. Mat sparse to dense, low and thin to average, downy to woolly to floccose to felty to crustose, at 6 wk densely and deeply woolly to floccose, with crustose patches, azonate. Mat hyaline to white to cream (4A2, with crustose patches to 6½C4). Reverse at 2 wk coloured, pale yellow (4A3-5AB2, disk 7D4), at 6 wk, pale yellow to brown to orange (4A2½-6½C4). Fruiting within 6 wk, or not. Odour nil to (+), "fragrant" (faintly lemony).
Growing on angiosperms (Populus). Sexuality and nuclear behaviour unknown.
Isolates studied: T-443, T-444.
