Description:Neotype: À…ngermanland : NordingrÀ¥ Parish, Sweden. Summer, 1974, coll. R. H. Petersen, TENN 39847.
Fruit bodies several, subgregarious. Pileus 9-12 cm in diam, convex to plano-convex, faintly to strongly striate on the margin, "scarlet red 2" to "grenadine red" over center, "grenadine red" to "orange chrome" toward the margin, viscid, glabrous; flesh "apricot yellow" to "cadmium" underneath pileipellis, white below ; volval remnants as white to off-white floccose warts or patches, arranged randomly to almost in concentric rings, occasionally passing into thin, floccose material at margin. Lamellae crowded to moderately crowded, free and remote, broad to moderately broad, white to whitish, edges frequenty minutely floccose ; lamellulae concavely to convexly truncate. Stipe 6-12 x 0.8-1.8 cm, tapering upward with apex expanded, stuffed to hollow, white below, "maize yellow" to "baryta yellow" above, fibrous to floccose-fibrillosescaly ; basal bulb ovoid, whitish to pallid. Volva white to pale buff yellow, as ascending irregular rings of small to medium, floccose warts or patches, often leaving a shallow rim on upper portion of bulb, lower part of stipe often having several floccose, warty to recurved, scaly, ascending rings. Annulus apical to subapical, submembranous to floccose-felted, pendant, fragile, striate above, floccose below, edge often with small to medium, floccose chunks of volval material, often collapsing, lower surface white, upper surface "maize yellow" to "baryta yellow."
Filamentous hyphae of pileipellis 3-8 µm in diam, interwoven to subradial, slightly to strongly gelatinized near surface, hyaline to slightly yellowish in alkaline solution. Filamentous hyphae of pileus trama sparsely to moderately branched, up to 8µm in diam, clamped ; inflated cells up to 46 x 220 µm, clavate, cylindric, or irregularly elongate, terminal or rarely in short, terminal chains. Lamellar trama bilateral with distinct mediostratum ; filamentous hyphae 3-9 µm in diam., moderately branched, clamped ; inflated cells up to 30 x 120 µm, usually clavate to irregularly elongate, terminal or in short, terminal chains ; subhymenium ramose (fig. 1), although at times cells slightly inflated and almost appearing cellular, hyphae occasionally clamped ; basidia 38-58 x 3.9-11.2 µm, 4-sterigmate, occasionally clamped. Remnants of volva on pileus (fig. 2) a dense to loose tissue of interwoven to erect filamentous hyphae and having a terminal inflated cell or a chain of inflated cells ; filamentous hyphae 3-9 µm in diam, abundant, moderately branched, clamped ; inflated cells up to 47 x 63 µm, globose, subglobose, ovoid, broadly elliptic, elliptic, oblong-elliptic, clavate, cylindric. fusiform or astringo-cylindric; volval material at base of stipe very similar to that on pileus, with the cells generally slightly larger. Filamentous hyphae of stipe trama 2-6 µm in diam, sparsely branched, usually clamped ; inflated cells up to 62 x 455 µm, clavate, terminal, longitudinally oriented. Upper surface of partial veil composed of filamentous hyphae 2-6 µm in diam, sparsely to moderately branched, clamped, occasional gloeoplerous segments, and inflated cells up to 12 x 88 µm, clavate to cylindric, terminal : lower surface exclusively of filamentous hyphae, similar to above, but often encrusted with yellowish, refractile material.
Spores 6.9-7.7 x 9.2-10.0 µm, (E = 1.30-1.48; Em = 1.34), broadly elliptic to elliptic, adaxially flattened, thin-walled, hyaline, white to pale cream in print, nonamyloid, guttulate ; apiculus sublateral, cylindric to truncate-conic.
Habitat beneath mixed Sorbus, Alnus, Picea, and Betula; all fruit bodies found within 0.5 m2 and presumably produced by a single mycelium.
