Description:Hericium erinaceus (Bull.) Pers., Comm. fung. clav. (Lipsiae): 27, 1797.

Basidiome pileate, globose, hedgehog-like, fleshy, upper sterile surface more or less hirsute to tomentose, cream coloured, hymenophore hydnoid with aculei 1-4 cm long, yellowish cream, context fibrous, whitish. Hyphal system monomitic, hyphae with clamps, with thick and amyloid walls, frequently ampullate and variable in size, usually 6-10(15) µm wide, hyaline; gloeoplerous hyphae variable in shape and size, with granular content. Gloeocystidia present, variable in shape and size. Basidia clavate, 30-40 x 6-8 µm, with 4-sterigmata, with a basal clamp. Basidiospores ellipsoid to subglobose, 5-6.5 x 4-5(-5.5) µm, minutely verrucose, thick-walled, more or less hyaline, amyloid.
Distribution in Europe: Poland, Hungary, Belgium, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Portugal, Turkey, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, and Ukraine. Widely distributed in Italy and known from Piemonte, Lombardia, Trentino Alto-Adige, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Toscana, Umbria, Lazio, Basilicata, Calabria, Sicilia, and Sardegna.
