Description:Hyphoderma mutatum (Peck) Donk, Fungus, Wageningen 27: 15, 1957.
Bas.: Corticium mutatum Peck, Ann. Rep. N.Y. St. Mus. 43: 23, 1890. Syn.: Mutatoderma mutatum (Peck) C.E. Gómez, Boln Soc. argent. Bot. 17(3-4): 346, 1976.
Basidiome resupinate, at first orbicular, then confluent, adnate, hymenophore smooth, white to cream coloured or greyish, margin fimbriate. Hyphal system monomitic, hyphae with clamps, thin-walled, 3-4 µm wide, densely interwoven and closely packed in the subhymenium. Cystidia of two kinds: 1) cylindrical, more or less constricted with obtuse apex, 60-100 x 7-10 µm, thin-walled, not encrusted, enclosed; 2) thick-walled and encrusted cystidia (metuloids), 30-40 x 8-10 µm. Basidia clavate to suburniform, with a median constriction, 30-50 x 7-10 µm, thin-walled, with 4-sterigmata, with a basal clamp. Basidiospores cylindrical to suballantoid, slightly curved near the apiculus, 12-16 x 3-3.5 µm, smooth, thin-walled, IKI-.
Distribution in Europe: Estonia, France, Germany, Belarus, Poland, Croatia, Macedonia, Slovenia, Serbia, Belgium, Netherlands, Russia, Romania, Sweden, Italy, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Finland, Spain, Ukraine, and the Caucasus. Widespread species all over Europe, recorded from Piemonte, Trentino Alto-Adige, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Toscana and Abruzzo Regions.
Substrata: it occurs always on deciduous wood of Quercus ilex, Q. pedunculata, Ulmus campestris, U. glabra, Robinia pseudoacacia, Fagus sylvatica, Populus alba and Acer pseudoplatanus.
