Description:Fomes robiniae (Murr.) Sacc. & D. Sacc. (Pl. IV & Pl. IX, 27) Key Pattern: 1 2 1 2 6 2 2 2 3 2 1
GROWTH CHARACTERS.-Growth slow, 1.5 cm. in 1 week. Advancing zone hyaline to white, even, raised. Mat white in the margin, `honey yellow' to `apricot yellow' beyond which changes to `antimony yellow', `citron yellow' to `chamois' to `honey yellow', cottony to loose-cottony, felty, appressed near the advancing region. Reverse `sayal brown' to 'mikado brown'. Odour none.
Tests for extracellular oxidase positive; on gallic and tannic acid agars, diffusion zones weak to moderately strong, growth 1.5 cm on both, guaiacum reaction strong.
HYPHAL CHARACTERS.-Advancing zone: hyphae hyaline, thin-walled, branched, simple septate, 2.3-3.0 µm diameter. Aerial mycelium: (a) hyphae as in advancing zone, yellowish brown thin to slightly thick-walled, 3.0-4.6 µm diameter; (b) fibre hyphae thick-walled, yellowish brown, unbranched, aseptate, 1.5-2.0 µm diameter; (c) hyphal swellings present on slightly thick-walled hyphae. Submerged mycelium: hyphae as in advancing zone but much branched.
CULTURES EXAMINED: FRI 87: Context culture, isolated from M 469 on Aglaia roxburghiana Kurz., and FRI 40: Context culture, isolated from 4736 on living Terminalia belerica Roxb., causing white rot.
F. robiniae is distinguished by cottony-woolly, yellow mat.
